Design Informer – My New Web and Graphic Design Blog

The Jad Graphics blog has been around for about two months. It took a while for it to get going, but because of hours of hard work towards a few articles, it started to pick up. After the recent success of this design blog, I have decided that it is finally time to move on to bigger and better things.

I noticed that having the design blog connected to my freelance business was conflicting with the actual freelance website, so I decided to launch a separate design blog.

Thoughts About Jad Graphics Blog

Some of the readers that went to this blog get kind of turned off when they see it attached to a freelance business.
The design of this website does not allow for the addition of a lot of features that I want to implement. It would simply ruin the flow of the site.
I want to have a design blog that is more active and more community-based.
Some readers don’t want to hear about my latest projects and recent work and I want the Jad Graphics blog to feature my latest clients and designs.

Because of these reasons, I decided that it was time to create a separate design blog and switch the focus of this blog back to attracting clients.

Design Informer

Design Informer is a web design and graphic design blog. I will blog about freelancing, tutorials, freebies, resources, and design inspiration. This blog will also be my digital playground as well. Feel free to subscribe to the RSS Feed or follow Design Informer on Twitter.

While there are a lot of design blogs and communities out there, the purpose of this blog is still the same: to inform you about the latest in greatest in web design and graphic design, hence the name, Design Informer.

A Few Notable Changes

The frequency of posts on this blog will decrease, since I will be spending more time on Design Informer.
The content will change as well. More content will be focused towards clients instead of designers.
There will be no more tutorial posts. You can find new tutorials on Design Informer.

Jad Graphics Pro Flickr Account

After months of using the regular Flickr account, I decided to upgrade to the Pro account. There are a lot of benefits that come with a Pro account:

Unlimited uploads and storage
Unlimited sets and collections
Access to your original files
Stats on your account
Ad-free browsing and sharing
HD playback for high-definition video uploads

This past month, I have been making a lot of wallpapers and posting them on Flickr but no one was able to download the high-res versions of these wallpapers. I wanted to change that so I upgraded. I also wanted to be able to upload as many videos as I wanted, as well as photos. I really think that the Pro account is worth getting.

Jad Ambigram

After reading A Clever Collection of 40+ Inspiring Ambigrams by Vectuts, I was inspired. I opened up Photoshop and I tried to design my very own ambigram. It is a lot harder than I thought it would be to make a great ambigram.

This guy, John Langdon is the absolute master at creating ambigrams.

After the site redesign, I decided to get some exposure on the website as well as get the word out that I had redesigned my site. One of the things that I did was I submitted my site to different CSS galleries. Here are the galleries that have accepted my site so far.

Shawnalea Shelly – Website

About a month ago, one of my friends called me and referred me a client. Her name was Shawnalea Shelly. She is an ergonomist in Oregon. Some of you are probably thinking, “What is an ergonomist, or better yet, what is ergonomics?” Ergonomics is the technology concerned with the design, manufacture, and arrangement of products and environments to be safe, healthy, and comfortable for human beings.

Shawnalea came to me with some basic goals in mind.
She wanted a website that portrayed a professional image.
She also wanted to build her web presence on Google, and a new website is a great way to do that. We talked about her design preferences and her likes/dislikes and her taste, and soon after, I went to work. I wanted to design a website to look very clean, simple, and have a business feeling to it. I also wanted to add a little bit of a feminine touch to it. I didn’t want it to look like a very masculine website. That led me to use a muted color scheme of purple, white, light blues, and gray. Because the site had lots of text, I didn’t want the reader to get bored so I placed different stock images throughout the site that helped break up the content a bit.

As far as the coding was concerned, I made sure that the site was valid XHTML/CSS, and I also made sure that the mark-up used good SEO techniques, as this was one of her goals. I used image-replacement techniques, as well as a good hierarchical structure for the heading tags. I added titles to all the links, and alt text to all the images. I’m also a bit picky with the way I organize my CSS, so I made sure that the CSS file was well commented.

She wanted the site to have some flair and effects to it, so on the homepage, I incorporated a rotating jquery banner. We also had a testimonial scroller on the front page. We also implemented a neat feature with the “Ask an Expert” area on the header. When you clicked on it, the top area would slide down and reveal a contact form, which I’m pretty excited about. The site took me about 3 days to get the design down, and these last 3 days, I have been coding away.

In conclusion, I believe that this project turned out pretty well. Now Shawnalea has a website that she can be proud of. Go take a look at Shawnalea Shelly’s website.

Naehas Landing Page

I finally completed a project that I have been working on for the past couple of days.

Naehas, a company that offers campaign management solutions that can easily automate and optimize your marketing campaigns, wanted a new landing page for their upcoming webinars. After discussing what they wanted, I quickly went to work and mocked-up the design in Adobe Photoshop, hand-coded it in CSS Edit and Espresso, and it is now finished.
